Background :: The founder
The centre was established in 1995 by Mrs. Rosemary Eve Wafula who saw the need to support the children in need. Around this time there were an increased number of street children in Kenya, and the civil society and the government were attempting to develop strategies to counteract the problems relating to children living on the street.
In a small way the organisation was initially started to offer spiritual guidance and meals. After developing relationships with an additional group of volunteers, the support provided by the Centre was increased and took on the task of supporting children in a more meaningful and comprehensive way. Soon after, the number of children needing support increased and the need for facilities expanded.
Currently the centre supports 150 children who are orphaned, destitute, abandoned, abused and street children. As well as small children, the centre supports around 40 youths each year through skills development programs. Our broad objective is to provide shelter, food, education, counseling and moral rehabilitation, health care and clothing and to provide support for childrens rights activities around the country.
Brydges Centre is registered as a charitable trust under the Ministry of Lands and is a charitable children's institution – Reg. No.CS No. 000321 (under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Services). Brydges Centre consists of a childrens home (65 children), outreach program (70 children in two nursery schools also known as drop in points) and two community skills training centres with an intake of 20 teenage girls and boys each year respectively.
